About Cornhead

My name is David Owens and I have been doing woodworking since I was 10 years old, playing in my father's shop. I got my first job as a carpenter's helper in Austin Texas in 1981 at the age of16 framing an apartment complex in the hot Texas sun.

My next job was at the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island in 1982. During my senior year of high school, I worked in wood and metal shops building anything from shoe shine boxes for the admirals on the hill to multi-sided dice boxes to use in war games.

In 1983, I moved back to Knoxville Tennessee, and in March of 1984, I got a job as a laborer on a framing crew. I worked with that company for five years building two condo developments and numerous single-family dwellings. I moved from laborer to head of finishing and closing the units.

In 1989 I went to work for Paul B. Smiddy. I learned all about trim, oak staircases, appliances, Cabinetry, bathrooms, bedrooms, and many other areas of homebuilding. Paul taught me how to do a good job the first time and to always treat the customer right and fair. I was with Paul B. Smiddy until 2004 when my second child was born. I took some time off to do some side jobs for friends and Cornhead Carpentry was born. I have been doing custom cabinets, beds, mantles, A/C louvres, cedar shutters and many more types of woodworking projects ever since.
